Photograph Notes: Although Chalk is now just a continuation of Gravesend beyond Denton the church of St Virgin is in open countryside just off the busy A226 with views down to the River Thames. A church building existed here for the Synod of Chalkhythe in 785 and was noted in the Domesday Book of 1086. The current structure dates from the 12th century. The tower a prominent landmark for navigation in the Thames and also clearly visible when travelling along the A226 dates from the 15th century.
