antique lithographed map of Palestine in original hand color, published

- The coverage area extends
from Baalbek to Kadesh Barnea, with an inset of Arabia Petræa, the
northwestern
part of Arabia, between Gaza and the Red Sea.
- The image area measures 39.5
x 32.3 cm [15½" x 12¾"] and longitude is measured from Greenwich and
Washington.
- Named places and features include Jerusalem, Damascus,
Dead Sea, Beirut, Jaffa, Bethlehem, Joseph's Grave, Galilee, Samaria,
Nazareth,
Judea, Land of the Philistines, Mountains of Moab, Zoar, Amman, and ruins of
an ancient city
south of Beersheba.
- There are numerous roads and caravan routes, as well as
rivers,
lakes, and other topographical features.

The inset of Arabia Petræa locates traces of an ancient canal between
Rameses and Suez and labels the Desert of the Children of Israel.
- The map was a decorative scrollwork border. It is dated
1855 in the lower corner and copyrighted by J.H. Colton &
Company, 172 William Street, New York.
