Photograph Notes: Statue of Achilles in the corner of Hyde Park is in memory of the Duke of Wellington. After successfully campaigning for the abolition of slavery, William Wilberforce turned his attention to the strategic placing of a fig leaf on this statue. This was the first naked statue placed in London since Roman times. As a member of the Clapham Sect he founded the 'Society for the Suppression of Vice'. Perhaps he was the Mary Whitehouse of his day.
