This superior quality miniature shows a relatively young lady in a red dress with a "Turkish" shawl and tortoisehell comb in hair (fashion of mid-1810s).
It is a work of well-known Parisian miniaturist Jean-Alexandre Maricot.
Jean-Alexandre Maricot (ca. 1785 Paris - after 1848) was a well-known Parisian portrait miniaturist. From 1808 he exhibited at the Salon, and in 1810 showed there his self-portrait and a portrait of his wife. He continued to contribute his works further to Salon exhibitions until 1848. Maricot's principal sphere of work was miniature, but he also painted in oils and watercolors. He is credited with portraits of numerous artists and writers.
The miniatures of Maricot, says Schidlof, "clearly show an influence of Isabey… Maricot was a very good miniaturist and some of his works are of great quality".
Nathalie Lemoine-Bouchard adds that he studied from 1800 to 1802 at the Academy, in studio of Jean-Baptiste Regnault. He was repeatedly awarded Salon medals.
