This portrait was painted by a good South German artist shortly before the sitter's departure to (his very last) campaign (Russian campaign of 1812). It is an extremely rare miniature portrait of celebrated Bavarian soldier, Major-General Justus von Siebein (1750-1812; see also our image nr.7).
While Commander of the 1st Infantry Brigade of the 19th (Bavarian) Division of General Bernhard Erasmus von Deroy (see our web # 38372) he heroically distinguished himself in the First Battle of Polotsk, in the night of 17/18 August 1812. Four days later, on the 22nd of August, in a forest by Gamtselovo, von Siebein and his soldiers were unexpectedly caught in atrocious gun and canister-fire, in which he received an abdominal wound and, as a result, had to be sent back to Polotsk. He passed away from this injury in the night of August 24th.
On the 25th of August a solemn funeral mass was held for the high-ranking Bavarians fallen by Polotsk. These men were: General Justus von Sieben, his country-fellow General Bernhard Erasmus von Deroy, Colonel Friedrich von Preysing, and Lieutenant-Colonel Joseph von Gedoni. Their corpses, placed onto five enwrapped in black coaches, were transported with full military honors to be laid to rest. The funeral took place on a battlefield, not far from the city and close to the village of Spas, in a Jesuit Chapel of St. Xavier set in a churchyard.
