LIFE'S COVER. "TOSCANINI and Grandaughter" -- The little girl on the cover with Arturo Toscanini is the conductor's grand-daughter, Sonia Horowitz. Her mother is Toscanini's daughter Wanda. Sonia is staying with her grandparents in Riverdale, N. Y., while her father, Vladimir Horowitz, the Russian pianist, is making his first U. S. concert tour since 1935. Sonia, who is 5, speaks Italian and French, is learning English. She loves to play with her grandfather (see pp. 63--67). Toscanini never encouraged any of his children to study music. But Sonia takes piano lessons.
