Viliam (Villiam) Chmel (1917 Timisoara (Temesvár) - 1961 Bratislava) was a well-known Czechoslovakian painter and graphic artist of the 1st half of the 20th century. He studied in Bratislava under Ludivit Fulla from 1939 and under Jan Mudroch, whose works had a decisive influence on Chmel's development as artist. Chmel also studied at the Vienna Academy in 1943. He became an active member of the Slovak National Uprising in 1944 and this political event became an important theme in his artistic work later on (after 1952). After the war he became a member of the artist group "29th August" which associated the best Slovak artists of the time. Chmel's inspiring visit to Paris in 1947 introduced him to the works by Georges Roualt and the following two years became artistically his most productive period (1947-49). In the 1950s, Chmel concentrated on pencil drawing and graphics. His life ended by suicide in 1961.
