Robert Nesta "Bob" Marley wurde am 6. Februar 1945 in Nine Miles, Jamaika geboren. Im Alter von 16 Jahren brach er die Schule ab und zog in die jamaikanische Hauptstadt Kingston. Der Hoffnungslosigkeit und politischen Gewalt, die in den Armenvierteln herrschte, versuchte er mithilfe seiner Passion für die Musik zu entfliehen. Mit seinem Freund Neville O'Reilly Livingston, der die Faszination für die Musik teilte, gründete er 1961 die Band "Rudeboys", die später in "The Wailing Wailers" umbenannt wurde. Mit der Konvertierung Bob Marleys zur Religion der Rastafari vollzog die Band einen musikalischen Wandel und konnte sich erfolgreich im Reggae etablieren. Nach der Auflösung der Wailers gelang Marley, der inzwischen nach London gezogen war, 1975 der internationale Durchbruch mit einer Live-Version von "No Woman, No Cry". Marley überlebte ein Attentat auf sein Haus in Jamaika und zog daraufhin dauerhaft nach London, wo er das sehr erfolgreiche Album "Exodus" aufnahm. Mit mehr als 75 Mio. Kurz nach seinem Tod wurde er posthum mit einem Verdienstorden seines Landes geehrt. Im Jahr 1994 wurde er in die Rock and Roll Hall of Fame aufgenommen.
