1922 system map of the Chicago, Milwaukee & St. Paul Railway,
"the world's longest
electrified raiload," printed more than 100 years ago.

- Printed text below the map reads "More than 11,000 miles
of perfectly
equipped railroad. Serving thirteen States in the West and
Northwest...For a distance of 650 miles, over
the Belt, Rocky, Bitter Root and Cascade mountains, between
Chicago-Seattle-Tacoma,
all trains are hauled by giant electric locomotives, using White
Coal
for power."
- The term "white coal" was a metaphor used to describe
hydroelectricity, evoking the rushing mountain
streams that could generate electricity.
- The coverage area of the map exdends from Chicago to Puget
Sound, with an inset
of the area from Chicago to southern Indiana and a profile view of the
mail line
between St. Paul-Minneapolis and Seattle-Tacoma, with elevations in
feet.
- Condition: This map is in excellent
condition, bright and clean, with a vertical center fold, as
issued, and no marks, rips, or tears.
It is blank on the back, with no printing on the reverse side. Please
