Photograph Notes: Eastbourne Pier dates from 1872. It has suffered its share of damage from the elements, part of it being swept away in 1877, and during World War II its decking was removed and machine guns were installed with which to repel enemy landings (shades of Walmington-on-Sea). There are numerous kiosks, food outlets and entertainments on the pier - its Victorian camera obscura was restored in 2003. At the pier entrance is a fish and chip kiosk, which in my experience serves up an excellent product.
