Photograph Notes: Seen at the entrance to the brick tunnel is the "ditch" featured in photo [[599341]]. It's a particularly wide, deep ditch full of water, which strikes terror into the hearts of passing car drivers when there's black ice about. It's no ordinary ditch! It never dries out like the other ditches, and that's because it's actually an extension of the millpond. There is a sluice at the other end which keeps the water high, and this waterway connects with the pond at Alvingham water mill. As for the tunnel, the footpath sign and bridge in the background mark the edge of the Louth canal (Louth Navigation), which runs at right-angles to the ditch: the water in the ditch "U-tubes" under the canal! The Environment Agency cleans out the sludge from this brick tunnel periodically, and there are some remarkable pictures of the inside of the tunnel at http://www.louthcanal.org.uk/photos4.html.
