1978. "Scientists investigating the briny deep are threatened by a giant turtle and the spirit of a young brunette swimmer in the Bermuda Triangle." A minor cult classic of doomed romance with an uneasy blend of science fiction and mystical fantasy. A young man discovers a forever young "imaginary friend" who only appears to men about to drown or to be lost at sea. Traumatized, orphaned college dropout Magnus Dens returns to Bermuda to find the cause of his father's mysterious death years before. At the Bermuda Biological Station, he finds Eric and Dr. Paulis, friends and colleagues of his late father, and joins them on a quest for gigantic sea creatures. He also meets Jennie Haniver, a mysterious young woman who was once his only childhood friend. Paulis' housekeeper, an island local, warns Magnus that Jennie is dangerous. The beautiful but vain young woman had made a pact with the Devil centuries before and lives forever young deep in the waters of the Devil's Triangle. Nobody heeds the folklore and the researchers trap the giant sea turtle, setting the stage for a deadly confrontation with both minions of the Devil. VIEWER COMMENT : " I know so many people who remember this flick from their childhood. They remember the haunting images, its classical music, cheesy special effects, themes of loss and despair and a decidingly un-Hollywood ending. I was 11 years old and my brother was 7 when we saw this movie together. I spent the next 20 years trying to find the "Giant Turtle" movie again, but not able to remember its original title. I remember I once caught part of the end of it in the late 1980's, probably on WGN or TBS cable tv, late at night, then never again. Like a haunting dream that returns to you, night after night, this movie eluded me. The film's main theme, "Jenny," still gives me goosebumps when I hear it. I still recommend to anyone, thinking of vacationing in Bermuda, to see this movie, before they go." VIEWER COMMENT : "This movie is an odd chapter in the history of animation studio Rankin / Bass as it is a live-action production. The moments I remember most is the turtle swimming into the depths with Carl Weathers attached to it and Connie Sellecca as Jenny, the mermaid, with green eyes. I saw it on cable television about 10 years ago. This eerie, wistful horror fantasy cast a dreamlike spell which has stayed with me ever since. It has a kind of WICKER MAN-like aura. It reminds me of the style of Ray Bradbury. In fact, it feels more Bradbury-esque than any official Bradbury film adaption I have ever seen. A strange mix of fatalistic melancholia and naive, far-fetched fantasy. I must see this movie again!  This is my personal 'Holy Grail' movie that affected me as I grew up. I cannot find it!! Can any body help me out?" BEHIND THE SCENES TRIVIA : Co-writer / producer Arthur Rankin Jr. actually moved to Bermuda after making the film, and lived there for the rest of his life. The name "Jenny Haniver" comes from a type of folk art that sculpts the carcasses of rays and skates into human-like forms that are often sold as "mermaids".

Cast Includes : Connie Sellecca, Burl Ives, Carl Weathers, Leigh McClusky, Julie Woodson, Ruth Attaway
