Photograph Notes: Swinderby close to the Newark-Lincoln road was a Bomber Command station during World War II. The site was prepared somewhat hastily in the late 1930's and the airfield surface was not really suitable for heavy bomber operations. See Patrick Otter's book 'Lincolnshire Airfields in the Second World War'. At times when waterlogging made operations impossible activity was transferred to Swinderby's 'satellite' station at Winthorpe on the outskirts of Newark Notts.
