Here we have a RARE !! Antique English Pocket Gilt-Brass Hydrometer, Moisture or 'Damp Detector' Meter.  These Victorian English instruments gained popularity during the latter part of the 19th century where they were devised for measuring how damp cloth and linens were when they were returned from laundries used by the wealthy due to the lack of home facilities. Due to their portability, they are also considered to have been used for traveling purposes and the testing of hotel linens and overnight facilities for similar reasons. There is no maker name on this meter.  The dial is marked: DRY  NORMAL   DAMP and graduated in the % of moisture in the air.  The instrument is in very good 'used' working condition. The case shows all of the original shiny gilt-brass finish.  The dial surface is in very condition with a light aging / tanning of the face surface. The beveled-edge crystal is in very good condition with no nicks. The top crown and bow ring are in very good condition. The back has holes to allow air flow inside the case.  The meter is 1-7/8" in diameter.  The original Moroccan Red leather case is in good 'used' condition with wear to the outside leather surfaces.  The inside has a very good purple felt lining. The case has a good working hinge and a decorative brass clasp.   You rarely see these offered for auction on eBay ! Now is the time to add this meter to your collection !!

* THIS IS AN AUTHENTIC ANTIQUE !!  NOT A REPO THAT MANY SELLERS TRY TO MARKET AS AN ANTIQUE.
