Round miniature with portrait of a gentleman, whose dress and hairstyle speak for the period around 1790. He is depicted seating on a terrace with a bust of King Louis XVI behind him. He is wearing a dark blue jacket and is decorated with a Chevalier Cross of French Order of St. Louis (Ancien Régime). Next to the cross, we see a watch. This watch model - very popular in 1780/90s - was customary worn not on jacket's hemline, but on coat's lapel. On verso of the miniature, we find an old inscription, which provides his name: "Gibelin Henrice /…eure". Hence, we are dealing here with a certain Henri (or Heinrich) Gibelin. In our web research, we were able to find only one man with identical name. He served in Louis XVI's France and was a Swissman from town Solothurn. His full name was Heinrich Daniel Gibelin. In the early 1770s he was listed in his native town as a shoemaker. Then, as so many of his young countrymen, as a "solddienst" (also "soeldner"; english: mercenary), he entered the French Army, where he obviously served in one of the 18 "Swiss" regiments. Later on he retired from military service and returned to Solothurn, where he then became a "seckelmeister" (treasurer) of the town council. He was also one of the wealthiest citizens of that town. Gibelin was married to Maria Anna Ludovica von Roll. Their son, Victor von Gibelin, began his military carrier also as a mercenary, and, at the age of 21, was one of the commanders of the Defense of Tuileries (August 10th 1792). Later on he became an esteemed politician of the Canton Solothurn.
At the time of portrait's execution, the sitter lived in Solothurn, and we are certain that this miniature is a work of a Swiss artist from that region.
