These original antique first edition prints, or plates, are made by a form of printing called copper plate engraving. This is a time-consuming detailed printing process which creates a print with rich fine lines. Historically this process has been used by important artists such as Albrecht Dürer and Peter Paul Rubens.

Artist - Robert John Thornton M.D.

Robert John Thornton (1768–1837) was an English medical doctor with a love for botany. He was a member of the University of Cambridge, and the Royal London College of Physicians.

Thornton is best known for the his dramatic large folio plates of The Temple of Flora published in 1799. Complete volumes and even individual prints of The Temple of Flora are rare and found in the rare book rooms of museums and institutions. Although considered a masterpiece now, it was not successful at the time of publication and was never completed.

Publication -  an original print from...

Publication: British Flora, First Edition

British Flora was published in 1812 in two volumes just after The Temple of Flora. Many of the prints of Elements of Botany are like studies for the larger prints in The Temple of Flora.

Condition

Being that this paper is over 200 years old, it shows some signs of age, as in darkening around the edges and light foxing. The paper is a light/medium weight, and is strong and not brittle. The reverse side of the print is blank. Some prints have an “1810” watermark in the paper - which is only visible when held up to the light.

Some prints are hand-colored and others contain no color at all. All color is vibrant. Please see the photos for actual details.

Each antique print arrives with an archival acid-free board and in a poly sleeve suitable for archival storage.

Please look at the photos carefully, including cropped detail photos, which will show you more than you can see with your eyes alone.
