LOW STARTING BID! NO RESERVE!INCLUDES CERTIFICATE OF AUTHENTICITY The Greenback Party was organized in Indianapolis, Indiana, on November 25, 1874. It advocated withdrawal of all national and state bank currency issued by the government. The formation of the party was the result of difficult economic conditions across the country, and the party advocated the issuing of paper money not backed by gold. Farmers and workers were the party's constituency. The 1876 Greenback Party met in Indianapolis May 16-18, 1876, and nominated Peter Cooper for President and Samuel F. Cary for Vice President. Republican Rutherford B. Hayes (4.0 million popular votes, 185 electoral votes) defeated Democrat Samuel J. Tilden (4.3 million popular votes, 184 electoral votes), and Greenback Peter Cooper (81,737 popular votes). In 1878, 13 Greenbackers were elected to the U. S. Congress.

The following is what is being offered for sale: An authentic 1878 Greenback 7¾ inches by 3 ⅜ inches printed by "THE HELIOTYPE PRINTING CO. BOSTON." Portrait of Benjamin F. Butler on each side! THE PEOPLE'S MONEY. CHEAP AND PLENTY. THIS IS ONE THOUSAND DOLLARS. This is not a promise to pay One Thousand Dollars. If it were a promise,it would require to be redeemed, which would be very expensive. The people'smoney should not be expensive. As this bill is not to be redeemed it needs nosecurity back of it. There is nothing to be secured, and therefore it is ABSOLUTE NONSENSE to declare that this money is secured by the Good Faith of the People and by all the Property in the United States. The phrase is used simply because it sounds well... All who desire a change can vote for B.F. BUTLER, who has already changed from soft to hard money, and back again, and whose election would CHANGE HIM FROM A CONGRESSMAN INTO A GOVERNOR..." This Greenback was first distributed during Benjamin F. Butler's 1878 campaign for Governor of Massachusetts. Republican Benjamin F. Butler was elected to the 45th Congress, serving from March 4, 1877 to March 3, 1879. Congressman Butler declined to be a candidate for renomination, unsuccessfully running for Governor of Massachusetts as an independent in 1878 and as a Democrat in 1879. In 1882, Butler was elected Governor by the combined efforts of the Greenback and Democratic Parties.
