If you have been watching the prices of Lincoln cents lately you know that their values have been skyrocketing in the last few years and are getting much tougher to find. The next few years should be very exciting for Lincoln cent collectors. This year the Lincoln cent series going all the way back to the wheat cent will be 114 years old and be the longest running coin series in U.S. history. Congress passed a bill that made changes to the Lincoln cent in 2009 celebrating the bicentennial anniversary of the birth of Abraham Lincoln. The Mint produced 4 circulating commemorative cents during 2009 that represent different aspects of Lincoln's life: A) His birth and early childhood in Kentucky - Log Cabin - ; B) His formative years in Indiana; C) His professional life in Illinois; & D) His Presidency in Washington D.C. The U.S. Mint also produced a “Copper” 2009 cent just for collectors that is only available in Mint and Proof sets. It contains the same composition as the early wheat cents, not the copper coated zinc that today's cents are made of. In 1982 the Mint switched from copper cents to copper coated zinc because it was costing more than one cent to make a copper cent. In the last few years zinc prices have went up so much that it is once again costing the Mint more than face value to produce them so you can bet they probably won't make them much longer. The Canadian Mint has already discontinued production of their one cent coin. All of these changes in design combined with the fact that the Mint will probably eliminate cent production soon will push prices of Lincolns ever higher as more and more collectors compete for the remaining specimens. Would make an excellent gift for that special collector in your life or just to put away for the future.
