Volume 1: "The Vigilante Era" 1850 -1889. The history of the LAPD began in the city known "as the most miserable pest hole in the state." A Glimmer of Professionalism" 1889. 1900. Chief John Glass turned what was in essence a group of watchmen into professional officers of that day. Discipline and organization was the order of the day. 


Volume 2: 'New Century - New Challenges" 1900. 1920. As the new century began, the LAPD would face its worst period of corruption. For the next 40 years. LAPD would struggle with a seemingly endless cycle of reform. The Dark Days" 1920 1930. The fun and hoopla of the Roaring 20's ushered in new problems for the LAPD, including the Great Depression, the prohibition of alcohol, and meddlesome politicians. 


Volume 3: "The Turbulent Thirties" 1930 -1939. Los Angeles and the LARD of the 1930's was a society gone wrong. The law was bought. Gambling ships were anchored off shore while police exams were being sold out of a back room in City Hall. Age of Reform and Professionalism" 1940 -1949. From the turmoil of the 1930's a new LAPD emerged. The new breed of LAPD didn't buy their jobs, they earned them. 


Volume 4: 'The Era of William H. Parker" 1950.1966. No person in the history of the LARD had a more significant impact in professionalizing the department then Parker. "Reaching Out" 1966 -1918. For most of the 20th Century, the LAPD has stressed the importance of working with and for the community. 


Volume 5: 'A (op's Chief' 1918 -1992. Police Chief Daryl Gates faced one crisis after another as head of the LAPD. "The New Millennium" 1992 - 2000. Chief Willie Williams came to Los Angeles surrounded by the political establishment. But for a department steep with tradition, on outsider would not find the going very easy.
