The Gold of Fairnilee

A renowned fairytale set in Scotland about Randal, a knight's son, who wishes at a well to meet the Fairy Queen.  By the historian, mythologist, classical scholar and psychic researcher, Andrew Lang.

This is a first edition from the year of publication, 1888.  The inscription in the front reads, "For Fairy Jelly from his affectionate Uncle Vardy.  Christmas 1888."  It has colour plates throughout and is in very good condition for a 134 year old book.

Pale green cloth hardback showing only slight signs of wear, bumped at extremities, board corners lightly bumped and a few black dots. The title and author's name are in gilt lettering on the front board. Colour frontpiece by T Scott and 14 other chromolithographed plates by E A Lemann. The inside cover pages have some brown staining and the back one is creased.  There is some foxing/mottling to the first and last few pages. Interior pages have very mild brown discolouration only, mainly opposite the colour plates which themselves are unaffected.  Decorative heads to chapters and tailpieces.  Decorative initial letter of each chapter. The first two pages of chapter 13 are rough cut 4-5mm in from long edges.  Publisher's lists of books in rear.
