CHipSPK cyclist hip and shoulder protection kit

Shoulder and or Hip protector kit for road cyclists.

These 2 pads are 3D printed (FDM technology) in flexible TPU polyurethane and fit conveniently under your lycra jersey or bibs. They can protect your collarbones or your hips.

They are compatible with summer weather riding.

One size fits all.

The total weight is 100 grams (2 pads).

No other protectors are as light and transpire to the point of being compatible with summer road biking. For the fastest road riders, these protectors are aerodynamically compatible and do not slow you down in a significant way.

The 3D fabric structure (NASA Chainmail) provides the flexibility needed to be worn underneath the lycra garments. They usually stay in place without help. If you are riding with particularly loose jerseys or bibs, you might have to find a hack to keep them in place.

This protector focuses on the body's easy-to-protect but vulnerable parts: the collarbone and the hip. Those areas tend to come in contact with the tarmac frequently, especially for cyclists who ride alone. Those areas are not covered by muscles and generate a direct hit bone to the asphalt.

These pads have been designed to dampen the first hit, skid over the asphalt and reduce road rash.

These protectors are the latest and greatest evolution of a project that went through a crowdfunding campaign and is now expired. This was the introduction video of the crowdfunding campaign:

The previous prototypes went through a crash (mine!). The performance of the protectors in that crash is the reason why I have decided to carry ahead with this project.

I am convinced that the probability of getting a broken bone when crashing with a bicycle is proportional to the rider's age. Meaning: if you are 10 years old and crash, you have a 10% probability of getting hurt; If you are 60 years old, you have a 60% chance of getting hurt.

The crash is visible here:

NOTE 1: These 3D-printed protectors are now very close to what they should be. However, so far, nobody has crashed on these protectors. Therefore, if you crash while wearing these pads, don't hesitate to get in touch with me, share pictures of the damage, and I'll gladly send you another kit.

NOTE 2: The color of these pads is linked to the TPU wire that the 3D printer has available. The current wire was of this “ocean blue”. So these pads are ocean blue.

No muscle areas, only bone.

Muscles do not cover the area in the back of the shoulder and around the hip. If you crash off your bike and hit there, it is a direct hit bone to the asphalt. It should not be too difficult to insert some protections under the jersey and the bibs and avoid the experience of a bone-to-asphalt direct hit.
