Original 1842 map drawn by John Arrowsmith titled "Sketch of a Route from Ankóber to Gédem."

  • It shows the route followed by Dr. Charles Tilstone Beke through part of Abyssinia (Ethiopia) in 1841.

  • The map names rivers, mountains, villages, and other features, and it has a table of statistics on the temperature at which water boiled in various locations.

  • Dr. Beke was an English biblical scholar, geographer, and businessman who played an important role in the final phase of the discovery of the sources of the Nile River.

  • The map was published in the Journal of the Royal Geographical Society, Volume 12, 1842. The image area measures 19.8 x 12.6 cm [7¾" x 5"].

  • Condition:  The map is in very good condition, uncolored, with a single vertical fold, as issued, with no marks or writing. It is printed on a lightweight paper and is blank on the back. There are a couple of archival tape reinforcements on the reverse side, where the paper has weakened. Please see the scans and feel free to ask any questions.
