Original 1842 map drawn by John Arrowsmith titled "Sketch of a Route
from Ankóber to Gédem."
- It shows the route followed
by Dr. Charles Tilstone
Beke through part of Abyssinia (Ethiopia) in 1841.
- The map names rivers, mountains, villages, and other
features, and it has a table of statistics on the temperature at which
water boiled in various locations.
- Dr. Beke was an English biblical scholar, geographer, and
businessman who played an important role in the final phase of the
discovery of the sources of the Nile River.
- The map was published in the Journal of the
Royal Geographical Society, Volume 12, 1842. The image area
measures 19.8 x 12.6 cm [7¾" x 5"].
- Condition: The map is in very good
condition, uncolored, with a single vertical fold, as issued, with no
marks or writing. It is
printed on a lightweight paper and is blank on the back. There are a
couple of archival tape reinforcements on the reverse side, where the
paper has weakened. Please see
