For sale is this incredibly rare 3 volume set of medieval folio books from 1585. This is the complete work “Instruments of the First Notary Jean Papon”, “Counselor of the King, Lieutenant General of Bailiwick of Forests”, 3rd Edition. These three volumes are each bound separately and measure roughly 14” tall and are about 2” thick each. They are HUGE. Medieval Renaissance era books are rare in themselves, but to have a full three volume set of folios with beautiful bindings are INCREDIBLY rare. The outer binding of these is made of leather with beautiful ribs and wording. The front and backs of the boards themselves appear to be made of cardboard, and are lined with a thin material (possibly parchment, thin vellum, or paper). Some of the outer boards have come loose from the binding (particularly in the second book). Provenance is in the front cover of one of them (signature of previous owner). There are other condition issues, but are really in overall good condition. Expect minimal writing, some light foxing, folded pages in places, stray marks, and other marks throughout, along with some other blemishes.
