Legendary creatures known for their mischievous nature, intelligence, and magical powers. According to Japanese Shinto Buddhist beliefs, kitsune (foxes) are faithful guardians and messengers of the protector god Inari. Myth has it, that kitsune would often survive calamities such as typhoons and tsunamis, and after surviving such destruction, they would grow an additional tail, and after long life their magical powers would grow, eventually giving them the ability to transform their shape. They were known for mind manipulating powers of illusion, charm, creating fox fire, causing strange lights in the sky, and even the power of possession. They would employ these magics to punish evil people, exacting judgements on sinful priests, greedy merchants, drunks and other blights on Japanese society.
