Description: The first black man to break the color barrier in the NHL was Willie O’Ree on January 8, 1958 while playing for the Boston Bruins. There would not be a second black man in the NHL (National Hockey League) until 16 years later in 1974. During the 1955-56 OHA (Ontario Hockey Association) season, Willie O’Ree joined the K-W (Kitchener Waterloo) or simply Kitchener Canucks and helped them to a second-place finish. The team folded the next year and the players relocated, becoming the iconic franchise, the Peterborough Petes.
