Charles Xavier devoted his life to bridging the gap of fear between humans and mutants. Himself a powerful telepath, he trained other mutants in the use of their powers, instilling in them a love for all people. For years, his X-Men have protected innocents from evil, mutant or not.

The twisted child called Legion uses his awesome powers to travel back in time and kill the young Xavier, and thus he completely changes the course of world history. A man who should have been a strong leader is now only a memory, and his dream of peaceful coexistence is all but forgotten. The powerful Apocalypse controls most of the world and imposes his brutal version of Darwinism on humans and mutants alike.

But dreams, unlike men, are hard to kill, and mutants still fight for freedom in Xavier’s name. Led by the enigmatic Magneto, once Charles’ greatest friend, this alternate version of the Uncanny X-Men struggles to defeat the ultimate evil mutant and end the Age of Apocalypse forever.

Story/Spoilers:

In issue #1, "The Crossing Guards", In Booth Bay Harbor, Maine, Copycat learns that the humans are trying to make a trek to Eurasia and reports this to the Brotherhood of Chaos. Bishop is at the X-Mansion, and he watches as the X-Men battle a holographic Sentinel courtesy of Dazzler. The team defeats the Sentinel and then joins up to help the humans in Booth Bay Harbor. Exodus teleports them all there. They are waiting for Sentinels to arrive from Eurasia so they can have them safely guard the human transport. They are going to infect the Sentinels with a virus that will mask them to their mutant presence. The plan seems to go as planned until one Sentinel suddenly attacks and as the X-Men try to find out what has happened, their answer comes in the name of the Brotherhood of Chaos who appears to have been onto the plan from the beginning.

Next in issue #2, "Sacrificial Lambs", Abyss toys with the kid he just kidnapped and brought to his ship. Outside, the X-Men are dealing with the Brotherhood of Chaos, their saboteurs of the plan to take over the Sentinels. They are being led by a Cardinal Madri and he tells Copycat and Yeti to blend into the crowd of humans. Quicksilver goes after them and grabs one of them, it appears to be the Scarlet Witch, who was thought to be dead. This turns out to be Copycat and the battle resumes. Banshee, meanwhile, has stumbled onto Abyss' ship and finds that he has enveloped the kidnapped kid in his coils and tells Banshee to return with Quicksilver. The X-Men have defeated the Brotherhood for the time being and Banshee finds Quicksilver and has him go to Abyss. Quicksilver fights with Abyss and Storm shows up and helps rescue the child and Quicksilver puts Abyss' head into his own void and it sucks him into himself, and he is gone. Outside, the X-Men have gotten the Sentinels back on track and it is transporting the humans over to Eurasia. Elsewhere, in Apocalypse's citadel Rex interrogates Karma who Sebastian Shaw had seen talking to Gambit and Angel about where the X-Men's hideout was. They threaten her with the Shadow King and she appears to give in to them. Apocalypse himself oversees this and plans to get Magneto at the X-Mansion.

Next in issue #3, "Parents of the Atom", Magneto thinks to himself at Charles Xavier's graveside. Bishop finds him here and holds a gun at him. Magneto asks him what is going on and Bishop shoots the Infinite warrior that is behind him. The Vanisher is leading them, and Magneto fights him off. Apocalypse himself shows up and Bishop attacks him. He appears to knock him out and then does the same to Magneto. He then goes after his child, Charles. Nanny, Magneto's robot has taken him into the sewers and an Infinite attacks her. She raises her weapons at him to attack. Later, the X-Men arrive at the X-Mansion and find Magneto's helmet and an Infinite that has the marks of being killed by Nanny. Quicksilver determines that Charles is in danger, and he goes after him by heading first to meet with Angel and find out if he was the one who betrayed them. He meets Angel in the loft of his club in Manhattan. Angel instead tries to help him and says that his father is in Apocalypse's citadel, while Bishop is in Quebec and Quicksilver must decide which one is more important to go to save first. In Quebec, we see that Bishop is being held by the Madri. They are holding a ritual that is calling forth the Shadow King. He begins to take over Bishop and sift through his memories. Bishop resists and suddenly out of his eyes and mouth comes Abyss. Abyss seems to put a few of the Madri into his void and then he turns on Bishop and realizes that Bishop holds the key to stopping Apocalypse and he isn't going to let that happen. At the X-Mansion, Quicksilver arrives, and he loads up the ship to go after Bishop since he decided that Bishop was a part of Magneto's plan to stop Apocalypse once and for all.

Finally in issue #4, "Dare to Tread on Consecrated Ground", The Madri are amazed that Bishop has survived the Shadow King and they continue their ritual of purification of him with Apocalypse's blood. Storm stops them and freezes the blood. She hits them with a wind and quickly frees Bishop. Banshee and Quicksilver sneak into the temple and knock out a guard. They then find Jamie Madrox and he has lost his mind. He admits that the Madri are duplicates of him and that they can be stopped if the X-Men kill him. At the X-Mansion, the other teams of mutants all arrive, and Rogue looks for her son. The head into the tunnels and find Gambit and the X-Ternals. They do not have Charles, but they do know what happened to him. Rogue knocks Gambit out of the tunnels and says he must tell her what happened to Charles, or she will kill him. Meanwhile, Abyss appears suddenly and attacks Banshee and Quicksilver. He tells them they are going to lose and Banshee attacks by flying into his void and using his sonic scream as loud as he can. Abyss screams and the entire temple begins to collapse. Quicksilver takes Jamie Madrox outside and he finally gives in and dies, and the Madri stop fighting suddenly. The team gather outside and head to the X-Mansion. The teams at the mansion get caught up on all that has transpired during the course of their assignments. Gambit admits that Strong Guy took Rogue's son, Charles. Nightcrawler appears with Destiny and the rest of the X-Men arrive with Bishop. They all begin to decide what their next assignment is and they realize they must rescue Magneto and Charles and recover the M'Kraan crystal shard that was lost.
