Saint Maixent, Abbé en Poitou (✝ 515)

Venu d'Agde, il fut attiré par la renommée de saint Hilaire à Poitiers et entra au monastère dirigé par saint Agapit. Il en devint l'abbé à son tour et la localité comme le monastère portèrent désormais son nom. Saint Maixent l'Ecole.

Maixent, d'abord nommé Adjutor - l'auxiliaire - , serait né à Agde vers 448. Après avoir reçu son éducation de saint Sévère, il rejoint le saint homme Agapit, en Poitou, dans la vallée de la Sèvre. Sous le nom de Maixent, qui sera plus tard celui du monastère, il devient l'abbé de la communauté. Estimé du roi Clovis, il meurt en 515. Dans l'ancien diocèse de Poitiers, une abbaye, trois prieurés, une chapelle et neuf églises paroissiales étaient dédiées à saint Maixent.
