Photograph Notes: A common plant on grasslands and heaths and being semi-parasitic gets nourishment from the roots of other plants, particularly grasses. (This makes the eyebright very useful in reducing the fertility of grasses, which can overshadow more desirable plants). It has opposing, oval and rather prickly-looking leaves. These are normally dark green but may often be tinted with bronze. The tiny white flowers are often streaked in purple and yellow which according to the Doctrine of Signatures resembled a bruised eye, hence its traditional use by oculists in treating disorders of the eye. In Greek mythology it was the linnet who first used eyebright to clear the sight of its fledglings and generic name comes from Euphrosyne, gladness, on account of the relief it provided. Its Welsh names, llygad Crist or golwg Crist means Christ's eye or sight. Small bees may be found on eyebright, which is also the food plant for two moths. NB Eyebright has been divided into so many species that I would not attempt a specific identification of this example.
