Stated Second Edition, 8vo, flame calf, good plus copy, lacking spine label, some neat reinforcement to outer joints and front inner hinge, text nice and clean, owner's name neatly clipped from top of title page; has half title, light wear to edges of boards. viii, 219 (1) pp. Elizabeth Smith (1776-1806) was a polymath and was fluent in most European languages as well as Hebrew, Arabic and some other tongues as well; she was the first woman to translate The Book of Job and was destined for literary stardom. Her father, a banker, lost his fortune in the economic downturn of the 1790s and joined the army; he was stationed for some years in Ireland, and Smith spent years there, too, although she was schooled in Bath. Good.
