This stamp was issued to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the modern
Olympic Games (1896 - 1996).  
The 1996 Summer Olympics were held in Atlanta, Georgia. 
The first were held in Athens in 1896 where 285 athletes, representing 13 nations,
competed in 42 events. In 1996, 11,000 athletes from 197 nations competed in
hundreds of events at the Summer Olympics in Atlanta.
 
The stamp features an illustration of the Greek statue Discobolus
("discus thrower"), created by Myron in 450 BC.
