The 1861 T3 $100 was in the second shipment of notes which, by the barest of margins (perhaps minutes), made it out of New York harbor around April 22-24, 1861, just before federal agents raided the New York plants of the American and National Bank Note Companies, putting an end to production on April 25. National Bank Note Co. produced this design less than three to four weeks after receiving the business on a subcontracted basis from rival ABN Co. Delivery was expedited by using all pre-war vignettes that were on hand including the America and train station vignettes on this denomination. National Bank Note Co. did some interesting modifications to the vignette of America, removing and widening the bars on the shield to "de-federalize" it and removing or fading a number of the stars on the robe to make it appear less"star spangled."
