"Eaglets. Grodno '39” is a dramatic picture of the war with the Soviets, seen through the eyes of a twelve-year-old boy, Leon. On the day of the beginning of the school year, September 1, 1939, the building of his school is bombed by German planes. For Leoś, Tadek, Ewelina and thousands of Polish children, the beginning of the war will become a school of accelerated maturation, a confrontation with a dramatic story written by adults.
On September 17, 1939, under the Soviet-German agreements, the Red Army enters Poland. He plans to take Grodno on September 20. The defenders of the city begin a hopeless, heroic fight. Few military units are supported by civilians, mainly schoolchildren. It is children and youth who heroically defend Grodno, becoming victims of the extraordinary cruelty of the occupiers.
Krzysztof Łukaszewicz's film Eaglets. Grodno '39” is the first film production about the Soviet invasion of Poland in September 1939, presenting the story of the heroic struggle of the inhabitants of Grodno against the Russian invader.
