ON DEMAND WE ISSUE A CERTIFICATE OF AUTHENTICITY (money-back-guarantee)

This miniature, executed in 1817 (according to the legend on verso, which is partially wrong - in that year the artist was not 15, but 20 years old), is a unique work (in this technique!) of the Lisbon artist Francisco Antonio da Silva Oeirense, who was known chiefly as a portraitist in oils and lithographer (see our image nr. 10 with his biography and for a thesis about him).

The adult gentleman depicted on this portrait, posing at his writing desk is decorated with the Silver (sic!) breast star and the red ribbon (instead of the obligatory neck cross) of a Commander of the Portuguese Royal Order of Christ ("Comendador da Ordem de Cristo")

After a profound search through the known portraits of this order's "comendadors", we discovered a person who strongly resembles our sitter physiognomically - see our image nr. 14.

But oops! In 1817, this man was already 72 years old, which, it seems, significantly exceeds the visual age of our sitter. However, it is impossible to exclude the possibility that the artist copied an earlier portrait (in oil) of him (probably even painted by another artist and whose whereabouts are unknown today) in the technique of miniature.

The next problem: "our" gentleman has a wart on his left cheek, but on the portrait of the person resembling him, it is barely outlined.

Still, a striking resemblance!

The name of the person discussed was José Correia Picanco, baron de Gojana (1745-1823; see our image nr. 14) He was a famous Brazilian physician (Brazil was then part of the Kingdom of Portugal), from 1817 (sic!) personal obstetrician of Queen Leopoldina (consort of Don Pedro), and it is quite possible that either he visited Lisbon or the author of the assumed earlier oil portrait (from the early 1800s?) visited Brazil (left Lisbon in 1807 during the Napoleonic invasion?)…
