Theodor Franz Zimmermann (1808 Koenigsberg, Prussia) - 1880 Vienna) first completed an apprenticeship as a merchant, then dedicated himself to fine arts. He studied at the Koenigsberg School of Painting and Drawing and under Johann Gottfried Schadow at the Berlin Academy of Fine Arts. Until 1837 he worked as a drawing teacher in Berlin, went then on a trip to Italy for a few months and finally settled in Vienna, where he first was active as a portrait and genre painter. Then he started to do animalist paintings and illustrations in zoological books (a.o. by Alfred Brehm).
Some Austrian sources say, his place of birth was Tyrol (village Nassereith), but this information appeared to be wrong. Nevertheless, the same sources inform us correctly, he regularly showed his paintings (mainly animalist subjects) at Vienna exhibitions from 1839 to 1858.
