Tanzanite can be easily separated from the two simulants by specific gravity determination or by accurate microscopic evaluation to detect natural or synthetic inclusions. One of the simplest tests to separate the YAG simulant from tanzanite is to view the stones under UV fluorescence. YAG glows yellow to red while natural tanzanite remains blue. If you run a UV lamp over many stones, you can immediately tell if any of the materials are YAG.
  Another example is the identification of natural versus synthetic blue diamonds. Although the UCD synthetic blue diamonds are optically identical to the natural Type IIb blue diamonds, careful observation with a magnifying glass or microscope can separate them from inclusion features, color zone characteristics, and grit and strain patterns that differ between the individual Two.
