This is a large Copperplate Engraving, made in 1693 by Pietro Santi Bartoli*. This is a genuine antique engraving, not a reproduction, on cream colored paper. It is in Very Good condition, quite remarkable considering it is over 3 centuries old. The beauty and elegance of this rare engraving is quite exceptional. We translate the Latin beneath the image to "The Pipe Cornice before the Altar, the tympanistry (?), the Mystical Chest will be compared to an eel, for the newly born Bacchus was crowned with a Dragon's Crown". There is a bit of waviness, but that indicates it is not permanently mounted.
1" Wide Brown and Gold reverse wood moulding with Gold Egg & Dart decoration around the inner lip, a double mat (very possibly acid free) and glass are included in this listing.
Image opening measures 8 X 15 1/2 and is in Very Good Antique condition.
Outside measure of the frame is 13 1/2 X 21 1/4  and is in Good condition w/ a few minor nicks.
Please carefully examine all images for condition.

*Pietro Santi Bartoli was born in 1635 and died in Rome in 1700. He was a pupil of Poussin and is renowned for his engravings of Roman antiquities. He was responsible for several wonderful works on Roman sculpture and art, such as Admiranda Romanarum Antiquitatum of 1693, which is the source of this engraving. This work is a set of engravings of beautiful decorations found on ancient urns, vases, sarcophagi, wall paintings, tablets and monuments from almost thirty sites in Rome. Bartoli's engravings, and his notes engraved under many of them, were an important reference for Renaissance and later artists.
