Friedrich Heinrich Ernst Freiherr von Wrangel (1784 Stettin/Poland - 1877 Berlin) was a very well-known German general of the 19th century. The revolutioners in Berlin of 1848 saw him as stubborn and an image of the Prussian military state, but the citizens of Prussia liked him because of his folksy style and named him "Papa Wrangel". Hindenburg called Wrangel the most folksy general of Prussia that Germany ever had. On the other hand he didn't fear repressive actions against antagonistical civilian population. In any case he was the soldier longest in service of German history. Born still in the time of Frederick the Great, he served in 80 years four Prussian kings and 50 of those years alone with General's rank. In 1848 King Friedrich Wilhelm IV appointed him to knock down the revolution in Berlin, which Wrangel managed without a bloodshed. This portrait shows him exactly during that year !

Eduard Ratti (b.1816 in Berlin) was a German artist and pupil of W. Bruecke and W. Hensel at the Berliner Academy. He exhibited regularly between 1832 and 1856 at the academical exhibitions and lived in Rome in 1840-41. He died in Vienna after 1856.
