THE ITEM FOR SALE IS AN ANCIENT

INDONISIAN JAVA MAJAPAHIT PERIOD STONE CARVED MALE HEAD 13th -14 CENTURY A.D.

A charming head of a young male, Majapahit Empire, region of Trowulan, Eastern Java, Indonesia, 13th-14th century.

The stone head is carved as a smiling, youthful noble male. Although it has been excavated it is still charming and the details and facial expression are still unmistakable.

Stone heads of this type have been found extensively around the site of Trowulan, East Java, (generally made from terracotta). This particular head still has the archaeological excavation number on the rear (245).

The heads are almost always found independently, with no bodies in sight. It is thought that these figures represent offerings to the gods for bountiful harvests and left at temples.

The Majapahit Empire was a powerful and wealthy maritime Empire based in Eastern Java that flourished during the 13th-16th centuries. Controlling most of the trade routes through the Strait of Malacca and the Java Sea.
