THE ITEM FOR SALE IS AN ANCIENT

INDONISIAN JAVA MAJAPAHIT PERIOD TERRACOTA FEMALE HEAD 13th -15th CENTURY A.D.

A charming head of a female, Majapahit Empire, region of Trowulan, Eastern Java, Indonesia, 13th-15th century.

The item for sale is a terracotta young female head wearing a headdress and large earrings, on perspex stand.

Although it has been excavated it is still charming and the details and facial expression are still unmistakable.

Terracotta heads of this type have been found extensively around the site of Trowulan, East Java, (some examples carved from stone). This particular head still has the archaeological excavation number on the rear (408).

The heads are almost always found independently, with no bodies in sight. It is thought that these figures represent offerings to the gods for bountiful harvests and were left at temples.

The Majapahit Empire was a powerful and wealthy maritime Empire based in Eastern Java that flourished during the 13th-16th centuries. Controlling most of the trade routes through the Strait of Malacca and the Java Sea.
