A grouping of items belonging to John Henry Dyson of the 1st West York Militia. The belt plate is rectangular fire gilt brass with applied silver Yorkshire rose, enclosed by a garter which is inscribed “FIRST WEST YORK REGULAR MILITIA” Dixon Pickup suggests in The Historical Society publication that the “Regular” tag is in response to the creation of the Local Militia in 1808. The epaulettes have two regimental buttons, garter stars in silver sequins and thread, gold caterpillar wire fringe edged in green twist and gold wire. Undersides are lined with yellow silk and complete with ties. Four gilt brass regimental buttons showing “1 WEST YORK” and manufacture mark to the obverse of “C.Jenkins London”.

The 1st West Yorkshire Militia existed from 1759 to 1816. Being disbanded and re-embodied numerous times throughout this period.
