• Leak detection:  By adding a UV powder or liquid to a system with a leak and using a UV light source, leaks can be found quickly. Auto repairers often use UV leak detection systems to repair air conditioner leaks, oil leaks, sunroof leaks, cooling system leaks, and oil leaks.

• Gem and Mineral Inspection: UV light is often used to reveal fluorescent activity in gemstone materials, which aids in identification. For example, to separate the two simulants, determine the optical character and birefringence. YAG is easy to break and tends to disperse more than tanzanite or synthetic corundum. Tanzanite can be easily separated from the two simulants by specific gravity determination or by accurate microscopic evaluation to detect natural or synthetic inclusions. One of the simplest tests to separate the YAG simulant from tanzanite is to view the stones under UV fluorescence. YAG glows yellow to red while natural tanzanite remains blue. If you run a UV lamp over many stones, you can immediately tell if any of the materials are YAG.
  Another example is the identification of natural versus synthetic blue diamonds. Although the UCD synthetic blue diamonds are optically identical to the natural Type IIb blue diamonds, careful observation with a magnifying glass or microscope can separate them from inclusion features, color zone characteristics, and grit and strain patterns that differ between the individual Two. In addition, the fluorescent and phosphorescent responses to UV light also provide a simple means of separating the two (especially the short-wavelength ultraviolet light responses).
