Unframed drawing by the well known Austrian artist Ernst Pessler (1838 Verona - 1900 Vienna). The drawing belongs to a cycle of illustrations for the famous English romance "King Horn".

Written in the last part of the 13th century, "King Horn" is probably the oldest surviving Middle English romance, containing about 1,500 lines. It is by an anonymous author and is based on an earlier work in French. Emphasizing action and adventure, the poem relates the story of a heroic Scottish prince's successful fight to regain his kingdom after his expulsion by invaders.

Ernst Pessler studied at the Prague Academy, then was a pupil of Professor Ruber at the Viennese Academy. He exhibited regularly in the greatest Austrian exhibition Hall "Wiener Kunstlerhaus" and usually showed drawings in style of romantical artists from the Circle of Moritz of Schwind. Our drawing (and the whole cycle in our possession) is presumably a a first version of the cycle with the same subject shown by the artist in "Wiener Kunstlerhaus" in 1877 (see clip from Friedrich von Boetticher "Malerwerke des Neunzehnten Jahrhunderts", Volume 2, p. 241).
