MEDIUM: Engraving to paper SIGNATURE: Unsigned DATE: c1900 to slightly earlier SIZE: Viewable picture 18 x 12.25cm (7 x 5 inches), image within the matte-area, 22.5 x 17.5cm including intaglio impression (8.75 x 7 inches), matte-mount 30.5 x 25.25cm (12 x 10 inches) PROVENANCE: From a recent country estate auction, private collection; from a folio of works, removed and framed; collections brief description lower left, noting the origins of the work CONDITION: Very good for its age, , to the lower edge, just by the inscription is a 0.5cm tear to the paper and the top edge is uneven where it has been shewn from a bound folio but does not enter the image area FRAME: Unframed, professionally mounted to matte

A charming scene, an expansive landscape with figures walking dogs, overlooking the ramparts of an old city to a fishing port below; also ascribed to the lower edge ‘The City Walls’ ‘Descending to the Port’. After a work by William Henry Bartlett, British (1809 – 1854); engraved by John Charles Varrall, British (1795 – 1855) The work dates c1900 to slightly early, a later engraving of the painting – Bartlett was known to paint in sepia wash to the exact size of his engravings to be produced. Presented in very good condition mounted but unframed, in a suitable mount this print-work willl look fabulous displayed.
