 Marked by curving pathways and flowerbeds filled with colorful favorite's, the magnificent Halifax Public Gardens holds the distinction of being one of the few surviving Victorian gardens in Canada. - Its main gates inspired the white bronze gate on the coin, where the same elaborate scrollwork sets a beautiful boundary between our world and the depiction of the bandstand that is at the heart of this Haligonian oasis. - Home to more than 140 species of trees, the 16-acre Halifax Public Gardens is one of the few surviving Victorian gardens in Canada. - It was designated a National Historic Site of Canada in 1984 and is regarded as a shining example of "Victorian 'Gardenesque' landscape design and planting traditions." Its doors feature the coat of arms for the city of Halifax and its motto, E Mari Merces.
