Ernst Liebenauer (1884 Vienna - 1970 Vienna) was a very well listed Austrian painter and illustrator of the early 20th century. He studied from 1902 to 1906 with Christian Griepenkerl at the Vienna Academy of Fine Arts and from 1906 to 1908 at the special school for history painting with Franz Rumpler. Liebenauer lived as a freelance artist in Vienna, where trips to the countryside, to the Alps or to the sea served as sources of inspiration. Liebenauer made oil paintings, gouaches, watercolors and graphics. His preferred subjects were landscapes, flowers, portraits and mythical scenes.

A number of military subjects also date from the time of the First World War. Liebenauer was also a sought-after book illustrator, especially for children's and young people's books, fairy tales and sagas, and adventure literature. Among other things, he worked for the publishing house Gerlach & Wiedling, which was known for its artistically sophisticated illustrations and for which Gustav Klimt and Kolo Moser drew as well.

Liebenauer's style of painting is naturalistic. His images of legends and fairy tales have a popular and poetic expressiveness. In the illustrations made for Gerlach & Wiedling echoes of Art Nouveau can be found.
