This wonderful monumental painting, painted in 1898, was found in one of antique stores of the artist's native city Toulouse. Obviously, it was one of the most important works of well-known French, turn of the 20th century genre painter Hippolyte Casimir Gourse, whose works are otherwise relatively rare finds at the current antique market (for instance, some of Gourse's other works that we traced in the auction records of the last thirty years are neither that large, nor of great significance).

Hippolyte Casimir Gourse was born in 1870 in Toulouse, France. He studied at the Parisian Ecole des Beaux-Arts under Jean-Joseph Benjamin Constant (a fellow Toulousain) and Jean-Paul Laurens. After completion of his studies, he remained in Paris, from where he took trips to his native Toulouse and the bordering it area of the Pyrenees. He also made long stays in Algiers, Tunisia and India. From 1895 he gained a lot of success by taking part in exhibitions of the Salon of "Société des Artistes Français". In 1890 he received the bronze medal at the Parisian World Exhibition; in the same (1890) year he took part in the Exposition décenale. In 1908, the renowned Parisian gallery Bernheim-Jeune held Gourse's personal exhibition, showcasing the artist's works made on his trips to Algiers, Tunisia and India.
