Photograph Notes: The stretch of the canal from near Kingshill Road to this bridge has always retained some water in it, even though the canal was closed in 1914. However, things improved in the 1990's, when some restoration took place, which included removing a large amount of reed growth. When this picture was taken, on a cold winter's morning, the canal had frozen over. The railway bridge originally carried a single track line, part of the line from Andover to Cheltenham, which also provided a link from Swindon Junction Railway Station to the now demolished Swindon Town Railway Station, in Old Town. Today this part of the line's route has been converted into a public footpath and cycleway called the Old Town Rail Path.
