To grow cultivated rocket is the sheer sporting good fun of having something grow at lightning speed. It is a terrific plant to include in a kids' patch of plants grown from seeds. Sow whatever you like, but the rocket will almost certainly come up first, usually in a few days (depending on the weather).
Cultivation
It doesn't need much room so it's perfect for a pot by the kitchen door where you can reach out and pick leaves for salads. Rocket usually grow to about 30cm high but can reach even higher when flowering and going to seed. Cutting down to size will help it regenerate and produce new shoots before flowering.
Sow in April - Sept
A nice warm bed in a sunny position – either in a pot or in the garden and well-fertilised moist soil with good drainage. It likes mineral rich compost and consistent moisture and will reward you with lots of tasty leaves fast and be ready for the first harvest in just 3-4 weeks. Try to avoid very hot and dry weather or very cold (frosts) – this stresses it out and bolt to seed fast. Its leaves become tough and bitter so keep it well watered and protected!
