The alcea rosea is a perennial and beloved flower in our country. Suitable for growing in flower beds and grassy areas. It reaches a height of 2 m. Each plant develops several stems from its base. The flowers are arranged at the top of the stems and open sequentially from bottom to top. When opened, the funnels reach 12 cm in size and are extremely beautiful.
SOWING
The seeds are sown in Mar-Arp and transplanted in May. Direct sowing can be done in April, May at a distance of 60 cm between rows and 30 cm in a row. Requirements: Nutrient-rich soils.
Sow the seeds From Late winter to mid summer on the surface of a good quality
moist (not waterlogged) seed compost.
Seal inside a polythene bag / propagator and maintain a temp of 15 - 20 deg C
Germination usually takes between 2 and 3 weeks.
DO NOT EXCLUDE LIGHT
When the seedlings are large enough to handle prick them out an pot on into 3" pots.
Gradually acclimatise to outside conditions before finally planting out appx 15" apart.
Later sowings that are overwintered in coldframes will produce larger larger plants.
