Photograph Notes: In the reign of Charles I, Archbishop Laud's attempt to impose a modified version of the Anglican Prayer Book on Scotland"Laud's Liturgy"foundered on fierce popular opposition, inspired by nobles who feared the Crown's intention to restore Church lands and revenues lost at the Reformation. An attempt to read from the Book of Common Prayer at St. Giles' Cathedral in Edinburgh sparked off a riot which culminated in a great national protest against royal and episcopal interference in the affairs of the Reformed Kirk. The anger was expressed in the National Covenant of 1638, soon to be followed by the Bishops' Wars of 1639-40 when the Scots invaded England before the King raised an army to enforce his will. In the long chain of events leading to the civil wars of the 17th century the St. Giles riot is widely accepted as the trigger for the outbreak of open hostilities. ://justus.anglican/resources/bcp/Scotland/BCP_1637 "The bishops are all gone to wreck, and they have had but a sorry funeral: the very name is grown so contemptible that a black dog, if he hath any white marks about him, is called Bishop. Our Lord of Canterbury is grown here so odious, that they call him commonly in the pulpit, the Priest of Baal, and the son of Belial." -- James Howell, visiting Edinburgh in 1639, Epistolae Ho-Elianae [[3263990]] [[1302424]]
